CHAPTER THREE
The Spider God Repents!! “What I want to know,” asked Orson, gently touching the swelling area just under his left eye, “is just where a woman of Mrs. Sigourney’s breeding learned to HIT like that.” With a burst of speed he caught up to Manfred as both young men trotted along the walkways, and gasped out “I thought you said she was a NICE lady! A waggish grin fell upon his roguish compatriot‘s face “When it come to the protection of her charges she’s not to be unreckoned with. Some say she could give the daughters of Svyatoy Anna Zaschitnik lessons.” “And I have,” the two young men, upon hearing a familiar, sultry voice whipped around, stunned by the dark robed figure. Upon removing her cowl they discovered they were facing the woman they were discussing. “I wish to apologize for the...unpleasantness back at the school. And," solemnly indicating young Orson, “my inadvertent injury, young Master Orson.” “T-thank you ma’am.” “You also forgot your lunches.” “Pardon me for asking,” asked Manfred boldly, ‘but should you be bothering trying to find us when there’s...well...a riot going on at your school.” “Oh, that”, a wave of a hand dismissed the contretemps. “My girls have it well in hand. Our basket ball team, the Dunkin’ Dinahs are quite good at mopping up their opponents. The team captain, Carrie Piper-Cub, is simply amazing... Oh dear, there I go chatting along when what I need to tell what I was going to just before the pirates so rudely interrupted is that the reason why Miss Glendive wasn’t at the school is because she’s currently at Meeting Island, doing some head hunting...for students, mind you.” With that the redoubtable Mrs’ Sigourney shook both men’s hands firmly and added “Farewell, my young knights of the South Seas!” before she melted into the crowd. After a moments pause as they both stared blankly at the retreating figure, Mannfried grabbed Orson by his upper arm, saying “Come on, we’ve got to get the the plane forthwith!” “That’s the other thing, Manny...”. With a sigh, Orson’s friend interrupted him. “Must you constantly question my actions?” “Uh, actually, I do. But never mind that, isn’t the plane back that way?” Orson pointed over his shoulder. “Not the new one.” “Oh no....” “Don’t worry, this one has fewer wings to get in the way...” to be continued |
